Creating Unity in Russia's Style Moderne--Analyzing Shifting Values Through Architectural Design in Moscow's Ryabushinsky Mansion
This is one of the last research papers I completed for an art history class before graduating in spring 2021. This paper explores the significance of Fyodor Schechtel, Russia’s greatest Art Nouveau architect. Russia’s spin on Art Nouveau was called the Style Moderne. This included style variations from traditional Russian timber and stone design to the contemporary nature-oriented decorative arts made popular by designers such as William Morris in England. The early 1900s were concurrently tumultuous times in Russian culture and politics, where increasing modernization caused many people to cling to traditional motifs. Others embraced change—thus creating a divide between the people. One of Schechtel’s most well-known buildings of this time is the Ryabushinsky Mansion in Moscow, now known popularly as the Gorky Museum. The mansion elegantly balances aspects from both ends of this Style Moderne spectrum, combining modernity with tradition and creating a synthetic style that respects convention while embracing innovation in a changing Russia. Mock Project Proposal for a Fictional Toy Company
I created this mock proposal as a semester-long project for a technical writing class in the fall of 2020. I created a fictional toy company based in Florence, AL to present a new toy design to another fictional Lego-like company. All information outside of the 'Project Feasibility' section is simulated to reflect information presented on a real proposal. I did use Lego's actual statistics, but replaced their name with this fictional Lego-like company. This project reveals my technical writing experience and my proposal-writing capabilities. Professional Writing Portfolio
This 63 page portfolio was put together in the fall of 2020 as a capstone project. It showcases some of my best work created over the course of my college career. The portfolio includes many professional writing projects, but places slightly more emphasis on my creative writing skills. At the end of this portfolio, I include live links to two of my virtual escape rooms created during my internship at the Florence-Lauderdale Public Library. These interactive projects were posted on the library's website as part of their Monthly Game Program. To view my full portfolio, click the link below.
Suicide Prevention Poster
I created this poster in February 2020 as a project to bring awareness to an issue or illness-- in this case, suicide. This poster was to be hung around the University of North Alabama's campus to remind students that suicide can be prevented through the support of one another. This information was taken from the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline's website. This poster also reveals my multimodal skills working in graphic design and professional writing. Writing as an Integral Part of a STEM Student's Career
This paper was written in the fall of 2019 as part of an advanced composition class. It confronts the common misconception that STEM majors will never need writing classes during their college career because of their selected majors. Many STEM students don’t place effort or value in writing within their curriculums, but this mentality harms both students' academics and their careers after graduating. The development of writing skills helps students with problem-solving, collaboration, presentation, and scientific writing. When students enter the workforce ill-prepared, it affects productivity, causes comprehension problems, and reflects negatively on the companies for which they work.
